From Type to Print: Ashantilly Press Teaches the Craft of Letterpress

Seven students recently took part in the Ashantilly Press Introductory to Letterpress Class, held over three consecutive Sundays in August at the historic Ashantilly Print Shop. The course offered participants a hands-on introduction to the timeless art of letterpress printing while working with antique presses in a truly unique setting.

Across the three, three-hour sessions, students explored letterpress terminology, safety practices, typesetting, and printing techniques. Each participant had the opportunity to select, pull, and set their own type, choose block images, and bring their vision to life through a personal project. From conception to final print, students gained practical experience in every stage of the process.

The class included all materials, along with an Introductory to Letterpress guidebook to support continued learning. Under the guidance of Sara Blocker, Vice President and board member of the Ashantilly Center, and Nicholas Silberg, students received personalized instruction in setting type, operating presses, and understanding the intricacies of this historic craft.

By the end of the course, each student had created an original letterpress piece to take home—an achievement that sparked pride and excitement among the group. Participants shared how much they enjoyed both the creative process and the chance to work with Ashantilly’s antique presses.

The enthusiasm surrounding the class highlights Ashantilly’s ongoing mission to preserve and share traditional printing techniques with new generations. With the success of this session, the Ashantilly Press looks forward to welcoming more students to discover the artistry and history of letterpress printing.
