Ashantilly Center recently welcomed historian Dr. Janet Gritzner for her engaging presentation, Highway 17: Georgia and South Carolina—Then and Now. Dozens of guests gathered to explore this storied coastal highway’s history, culture, and changing landscape, which connects so many of our communities.
Through photos, stories, and her own artistic perspective, Janet brought Highway 17 to life—showing how the familiar route has evolved over time while still holding memories for generations who’ve traveled it. Attendees especially enjoyed sharing their own experiences of growing up, living, and driving along the historic highway.
After the presentation, refreshments were served, and many lingered to continue swapping stories and reminiscing about favorite places along the way. The evening was a wonderful blend of history, art, and community connection—just the kind of gathering that makes Ashantilly such a special place.

Dr. Janet Gritzner is a visual artist and researcher whose work explores the landscapes and stories of the Georgia and South Carolina Lowcountry. Her Highway 17 project combines photography, oral history, and archival research to document the changing character of this iconic southern route.
