Ashantilly Center was filled to capacity on Sunday, October 18, as history lovers, book enthusiasts, and friends gathered for an extraordinary author talk and book signing celebrating the recently published Bartram’s Travels Illustrated: Embellished by William G. Haynes, Jr. The event was standing room only, and we couldn’t have been more thrilled by the enthusiastic turnout!
Editors Dorinda G. Dallmeyer and Harriet H. Langford captivated the audience with engaging presentations about this remarkable publication, sharing insights into the book’s creation and answering questions from an appreciative audience.
At the heart of this beautiful volume are 95 stunning watercolors painted in 1934 by William “Bill” Haynes, Jr. Inspired by William Bartram’s classic Travels, originally published in 1791, these illustrations bring the natural beauty and wonder of Bartram’s explorations to life through Bill Haynes’s artistic vision. The book beautifully connects the work of two individuals separated by more than a century, celebrating their shared appreciation for the natural world.
Following the presentations, guests enjoyed wine and refreshments while continuing conversations about the book, its illustrations, and the fascinating history behind its publication. Many lingered to visit with the editors and have their copies personally signed by both authors, making an already special evening even more memorable.
We were absolutely delighted to host this wonderful event at Ashantilly Center. Seeing so many people come together to celebrate history, art, literature, and the enduring legacy of William G. Haynes, Jr. was truly heartwarming. Thank you to Dorinda, Harriet, and everyone who joined us for such a memorable occasion!
